girls can be knights too…

So, we started school Tuesday morning, along with the majority of homeschoolers.
Or, perhaps i could say: On Tuesday I embarked on my journey to hell.
Just kidding.
Mostly…
Really, it’s been pretty bad.
I don’t know if my sweet, thirteen year old is PMSing, or just swallowed a demon in her sleep, but my goodness she has been unnaturally cruel.
The good news is i have been unnaturally patient and loving.
The bad news is that this hasn’t helped, at all.
Today we start pre-algebra.
Now that I think about it, the past two days were probably merely the platform awaiting the train to hell. Today is the day we board…
and to think, i was naively excited to get back to a routine.
But don’t mind me, I am sick. And have been spit on and treated like garbage/called names for two days.
I need sleep.
In other news, I was so excited to finally get to sit down and do a hard edit on my novel while my delightful eighth grader worked on her independent work.
So far, the novel is losing 0-10,000,000,000. It’s not looking good.
Next week maybe.
This week I have to kick this cold’s tuck-us and sleigh the evil dragon of a crazy thirteen year old pre-algebra… (Just kidding… of COURSE I mean the math and not the kid. Geesh.) I did beat her in bowling today. But not in tennis. Because i am the cool mom who not only gets up, while sick, to make her delicious breakfasts- but plays the wii with her and therefore TOTALLY deserves to be called ugly names and treated like garbage.
Just so we all know our place…
Wish me luck, and if possible, please send Armour…

Lest we forget…

Everyone is talking (and writing) about Christian Bale’s visit to Aurora Colorado yesterday, and why shouldn’t they be? This is good news… Not being a big fan of Bale’s, I exclaimed, on Facebook, how deserving of respect I felt this was on his part, causing a friend of mine to email me.
To quote: “…So you think I should plan a trip from Seattle to Colorado then? I mean, if all it takes is a guy to visit- and the whole world of moronic sheep are gushing- then I should plan it. I mean, who doesn’t want 10 minutes of so much attention. But wait, I wouldn’t garner such, what did you call it??? “RESPECT”, would I? No. Why? Because I am not a handsome movie star. It’s pathetically arrogant on this guy’s part. That’s all. It’s ego feeding at it’s finest…”
I disagree…
Maybe, had just one tiny circumstance been different, Christian Bale would have been a car salesman or an insurance agent. We don’t have a way of knowing such things… It doesn’t matter really, because he is Christian Bale- {bad attitude and press aside} A list, award winning actor.
And it doesn’t matter whether he played Batman or a car salesman, being a celebrity sort of carries the responsibility of a super hero.
People look up to and admire them, deserving or not.
This goes for athletes as well…
Their lives are no longer their own, they have agreed to share a good portion of it with the public.
Their presence alone can inspire someone to live, or even give a dying person the strength to fight a little harder. What ten thousand average names on a petition can strive for, could be brought to fruition with simply the backing of one celebrity.
Maybe it is silly.
Maybe it can feel a little unfair.
But those things do not make it any less true.
Sometimes though, we forget that we have our own superhero powers too.
One extra kind word, even when we aren’t feeling it, can turn someone’s day around.
One out-of-our-way smile can bring about the same results…
People ARE people, celebrity or not, and the most loving and beautiful gift we can bestow upon the world (celebrity or not) is kindness.
Be kind.
Give kindness, and by doing so, breath unspeakable beauty into the world. Each of us has our own beauty, and that’s our own super power. Don’t try, just be. See beauty everywhere and soon, whether you look pretty or not, you will be the beauty in the world and if Colorado has taught us ANYTHING it’s that our world needs more beauty…
Christian Bale did not have to fly halfway around the world to spend an afternoon with the hurting and heroic people of Aurora, but he did it anyway. Does that make him better than you or I? No… But it was a kind thing to do, a beautiful thing to do.
Regardless of our profession or calling, we have the same responsibility…
As a writer, as a mother, as a wife, as a person- I want to aspire to brighten people’s lives and make the world feel better- just like he did…
And there is NOTHING stopping me, either…
What about you?

Fan club president position for dibs…

I am pretty sure that my optometrist is my biggest fan.
Next to him would be his receptionist.
When a half hour appointment spreads to an hour and a half because said people are beside themselves, with enthusiasm, about my soon to be published book- one can’t help but smile.
Or at least I couldn’t.
Which was a good thing because eye appointments always leave me with an impending migraine.
Reason #2 that this egocentric smiling occurred would be when my new prescription sunglasses broke my bank at over $200.
It’s unfortunate that I have to have them. {Have to wear wrapped sunglasses, not clip-ons, due to extreme light sensitivity}
Earlier, during my time in their office, the receptionist, {who is pretty much the SWEETEST person ever} was going on and on about how I was going to make bank. I didn’t want to burst her bubble with the reality that only the rare freak instances {E.L. James}, sell outs and a small 2% of the rest of authors actually come close to making a good income. It was sweet that she thought I would be attending my next appointment filthy rich.
Anyway, back to my optometrist. Sweetest guy. I would recommend him to anyone. He even pitched me a story, which my husband later thought would make an incredible movie.
I also learned a lot about my eye disorder, which was really great. I guess that’s a perk to really being someone
Next thing you know, the Biebs himself will be sending me tickets to his tour. {Oh wouldn’t Genny die of complete and utter happiness.} There are certainly days when I wish such fame were a reality. Then again, if I were to have such power- I would simply use it to woo George Clooney into presidency.
I am, after all, a single focus girl…

Etiquette…

There is this little joke about being friends with a writer. It comically addresses how one should be careful, as they might end of a character in a novel.
Bwa ha ha, right???
I mean, we all know lots of interesting people and I would love to base some of mine as characters in some amazing novel.
If there is any truth to that, then being friends with a blogger could be doubly risky…
Except for the fact that it’s ridiculously uncool to divulge really personal issues about someone, behind their back, on a blog. I don’t care of you take the attitude of supporting them, or not. If you must bad mouth someone, on your blog (because it is your blog and maybe the bad-mouthable content actually has something to do with you) at least change their name. Change the details. Be discreet. Show some tact.
For goodness sake though, don’t ever (EVER, EVER, EVER) blog private/sensitive details about someone’s life, that does not involve you in any way, shape, or form.
It is the most vile form of gossip. It’s hateful. It’s ugly.
It’s wrong.
Seriously.
I am honestly horrified that this sort of thing actually happens.
I’ve heard stories, but only recently saw it. All I can say is that I threw up a little, in my mouth, and will never think of it’s author with any respect again.
Let’s have some class, ya’ll…
