G isn’t always for Gay…

When you take a boy away from normal every day life and stick him in Germany for a year, and follow that with Afghanistan for six months- his first trip home is bound to have him shopping for some really random stuff…
Our maybe that’s just our soldier.
Among his acquisitions were video games, fancy headphones, foam planes, RC cars and rubber bracelets, just to name a few.
Towards the end of his trip though, he came across a set of glasses dedicated to DC comic heroes. Among them was a glass with the emblem and name of Batman, Superman, The Flash and the Green Lantern. He brought said collection of four home and said, “One for each of us!” As he loves Batman, it was the obvious choice for him. He has given my husband the Superman position, so Superman was for him. He pipes up and asks me whether I want the Flash or the Green Lantern.
I, realizing he’s been gone a long time and may not be in the know, when it comes to certain things, decided to tell him about DC’s decision to make the Green Lantern emerge from the closet and announce his homosexuality.
“Really? Oh.” He responded, then laughed. He pointed to the giant green G on the back of the green lantern cup and said “Maybe Genny should get the Green Lantern one and you can have the Flash.”
You know, because of the G.
But Gen, in all of her thirteen year old super drama screams, “Of course you get the flash and make me have the gay cup. You are freaking trying to make me be gay. You are freaking acting like I am gay. I hate you!” And runs to her room sobbing, before slamming the door.
Apparently supporting said 13 year old’s obsession with things like Justin Bieber and fashion is pushing her to be gay. Who knew? i guess I have had it all wrong. Thank God I have her around, or i would be one really bad mother.
Moral of this story?
That’s probably how ridiculous i look (and sound) When i freak out about my assumption behind someone’s words/actions, before really knowing everything.
Now that’s embarrassing.

On family, milestones and France on stage…

Tomorrow we will have been a family, with Genny, for nine years…
NINE!
Chw remarked, when we were talking with friends about a few nights ago, that it “feels like forever,” to which Genny piped up, “Are you kidding me, it IS forever!”
Those nine years from the day we picked her chubby little cheeked face up, until today, really has been it’s own little lifetime.
We always do something a little special to commemorate our family anniversary. This afternoon we have tickets to a Broadway (on tour) show of Les Miserables. Being that this is my husband’s FAVORITE musical (my second favorite), Genny has NEVER seen it, and it is a beautiful story of redemption and adoption- it seemed like a fitting treat to celebrate our ninth anniversary.
For a time, it also looked like our adoption would be finalized today. As it turns out, that has been postponed but, lucky us, we still have to make an appearance in court today. (prayers are appreciated.)
I hope that today’s show really touches our own little Cosette and resonates within her a beautiful milestone…
Happy Thursday…

Lest we forget…

Everyone is talking (and writing) about Christian Bale’s visit to Aurora Colorado yesterday, and why shouldn’t they be? This is good news… Not being a big fan of Bale’s, I exclaimed, on Facebook, how deserving of respect I felt this was on his part, causing a friend of mine to email me.
To quote: “…So you think I should plan a trip from Seattle to Colorado then? I mean, if all it takes is a guy to visit- and the whole world of moronic sheep are gushing- then I should plan it. I mean, who doesn’t want 10 minutes of so much attention. But wait, I wouldn’t garner such, what did you call it??? “RESPECT”, would I? No. Why? Because I am not a handsome movie star. It’s pathetically arrogant on this guy’s part. That’s all. It’s ego feeding at it’s finest…”
I disagree…
Maybe, had just one tiny circumstance been different, Christian Bale would have been a car salesman or an insurance agent. We don’t have a way of knowing such things… It doesn’t matter really, because he is Christian Bale- {bad attitude and press aside} A list, award winning actor.
And it doesn’t matter whether he played Batman or a car salesman, being a celebrity sort of carries the responsibility of a super hero.
People look up to and admire them, deserving or not.
This goes for athletes as well…
Their lives are no longer their own, they have agreed to share a good portion of it with the public.
Their presence alone can inspire someone to live, or even give a dying person the strength to fight a little harder. What ten thousand average names on a petition can strive for, could be brought to fruition with simply the backing of one celebrity.
Maybe it is silly.
Maybe it can feel a little unfair.
But those things do not make it any less true.
Sometimes though, we forget that we have our own superhero powers too.
One extra kind word, even when we aren’t feeling it, can turn someone’s day around.
One out-of-our-way smile can bring about the same results…
People ARE people, celebrity or not, and the most loving and beautiful gift we can bestow upon the world (celebrity or not) is kindness.
Be kind.
Give kindness, and by doing so, breath unspeakable beauty into the world. Each of us has our own beauty, and that’s our own super power. Don’t try, just be. See beauty everywhere and soon, whether you look pretty or not, you will be the beauty in the world and if Colorado has taught us ANYTHING it’s that our world needs more beauty…
Christian Bale did not have to fly halfway around the world to spend an afternoon with the hurting and heroic people of Aurora, but he did it anyway. Does that make him better than you or I? No… But it was a kind thing to do, a beautiful thing to do.
Regardless of our profession or calling, we have the same responsibility…
As a writer, as a mother, as a wife, as a person- I want to aspire to brighten people’s lives and make the world feel better- just like he did…
And there is NOTHING stopping me, either…
What about you?
