Cards 4 Cancer…

It seems as though, ever the past few weeks I have read about several people making cards for cancer. Intrigued, I meant to look into it but then got caught up in my own life. Thankfully, my awesome friend was snowed in and spent her morning making cards for cancer. After following the link, Genny and I decided that we needed something positive and beautiful to do. We joined a local team and plan to get started on our cards just after the birthday weekend commences… If you would like to help, we would LOVE to have your help! Just shoot me an email or leave a comment.
According to the Cards 4 Cancer site, the cards will be delivered April 10th. I haven’t heard from the group facilitator yet. Our groups cards are going to the Mountain States Tumor Institute here in Boise. I’m very familiar with their services, as I’ve been a patient through them twice. I am proud to made cards for their current patients…
The program is so simple, that cards can be handmade OR store bought. They don’t have to be fancy or expensive, the point is simple to reach out connect with someone. Even if you don’t live here, you can help out. Just mail your card (or cards, it’s up to you how you contribute) to be by april 1st. I really hope that you will join, with me, to express our support and love.
From the site:

The Cards

Teams will collect as many uplifting cards as they can. The cards will be delivered to the cancer centers on or around April 10th. Most cancer centers will not let you deliver them to the patients directly so the team leaders are going to be delivering the cards to someone at the center who will then have the staff pass the cards out to the cancer fighters. The cards can be handmade or store bought. We ask that you stay away from “GET WELL” and also any religious messages in your cards. The cards may be signed however the person making the card feels most comfortable. The cards may be in an envelope or not but if you do place them in an envelope we suggest leaving the envelope unsealed in case the staff needs to look at the cards before they deliver them. Also all cards should have spiritjump.org somewhere on the card so that those who receive the cards will know where to go should they wish to receive more support. Team leaders should go through their cards to ensure that this has been done. If not the team leaders should write that in the cards.

Go directly to jail…{You Capture}

i waited and waited…
Like a good little photographer, i waited for the completely amazing reaching moment to present itself. For the 8 month old reaching for her momma, or the 14 month old reaching for a biscuit. I scoured the crowds for a moment, but one never came…
So… this is my ample offering, and yes- i am a bit ashamed… And now I know that I’ll go peruse the other You Capture contributors and be wowed at their non-board game brilliance…

A time to celebrate…

Ok… I will post pictures from Oscar party stuff later… Right now I just had to say that tonight was a lot of fun. (much more fun BEFORE my husband got home. Same stupid fight as always, then. Whatever… I don’t care.
The Oscars were great… the girls were (almost all) here and it was great… Avatar was the biggest loser- which was fantastically great… The Hurt Locker won, which is exactly what I wanted- and i am quite worried about Peter Sarsgaard… he did NOT look well…
Ridiculous husband drama and Peter’s health aside- smashing evening…

Confessions of a non-baker…

I wanted to elaborate a little, on that cake that I made this past weekend…

If you’ve looked at the recipe, then I’m sure you noticed that it calls for rosewater. I omitted that. It isn’t that i wasn’t up to scouring eclectic markets in search of it- as much as KMS wouldn’t care if there was an expensive additive in it or not.
The frosting turned out pinker than I’d expected. {In my defense, after dumping in SO MUCH food coloring, for the batter, the bit I used in the frosting did seem really minuscule…} What was fun though, was that I took a little portion of the cake, that I’d trimmed off, and I mixed it into the icing just after the food coloring had spread through. THEN I took an extra dollop of Cream cheese and did the same thing. If you look super close you will realize that the frosting has red and white specks woven in. It was actually the coolest thing. It didn’t alter the cake flavor, at all, and it was a super easy something that I could do to make it semi cool… (unlike my ULTRA COOL cake artist friend.)
Over all, it was delicious. Being the non-baker that I am- I probably would have abandoned the recipe early on as I was suddenly overwhelmed by the time commitment and amount of dishes accruing on my countertop- IF I hadn’t been making this cake for one of the kids. Anyone else, eh… a Cup cake from the local bakery store would have been sufficient.
For me, it was a pretty intense cake recipe and it took a long time. For some of you bakers, I’m sure it’s a piece of cake. ha. that wasn’t even intentional…
So- about the cake…
– if you are a baker and you like cake, make this one.
– it’s delicious.
– it’s beautiful.
– stick with the white icing. Unless you are making it for a ten year old girl, that is.
I probably won’t make it again, but mostly because I look upon baking the way many look upon a tedious chore check list. Once I’ve made the recipe, it’s crossed off and I move on.
